Throw Me in the Cotton Fields and Call Me a Slave

Fucking Arnold recipe
3 oz Southern Comfort® peach liqueur
1 oz peach schnapps
2 1/2 oz peach iced tea
2 1/2 oz lemonade

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and place above ingredients. Shake and fill a collins glass. Garnish with a lemon and enjoy the original Arnold Palmer with a twist of the south!

For those of you who have been following Bartender Rant religiously, you know that I've dealt with ditsy co-workers, unidentified vomit, booger eating clientele; the list goes on and on. The tips have been shitty, the shifts are long, and my sanity is about to commit suicide. But, here's one thing that you don't know, I have been working as a bartender for the past 2 years for FREE!!!

No need to adjust your eyes, that bold italicized word does say free and no, I don't get paid for the 10 hour shifts that I put in at the bar or for the irreparable emotional damage that I've endured. I only make money off of the lousy one dollar tips that all 8 customers leave me on a shoot your brains out slow Monday night. Oh yea and all that extra work that I do like operate the lottery machine, ring people up for the liquor store, clean, take out the trash, etc., well that's all done for the very low price of $0.00.

May we all please take a moment of silence right now to pity this poor poor bartender.............................................Thank you.

I'd be better off fucking arnold for my next job, at least I'd get paid to do that.

The Clientele Freak Show

Booger recipe
1/2 oz Malibu® coconut rum
1/2 oz banana liqueur
1/2 oz melon liqueur
1/4 oz Bailey's® Irish cream

After the first 1/2 oz, drop just a tiny bit of Bailey's on top.

From nut jobs to people who have nothing better to do than to drown their liver in alcohol, my bar sees it all. One guy puts in a longer shift than I do in a single night juggling beer after beer while another just sits there with a To Catch a Predator look smothered on his face(like those psycho clowns that people of all ages are weary of), waiting for some 14 year old girl he met on the internet to meet him there. At times I look up and scream, God save me from this awful place!

Most of the time I can deal with the creepers and the guys who are slowly killing themselves each time my shift begins, but it's the main act that really makes me want to quit my job on the spot without a 2 weeks notice. I like to call that main act, The Booger, for reasons you'll soon find out. Immediately upon hearing the door alarm and seeing him walk in, my heart sinks. I know that I'll only make a grand total of $1 from The Booger if I'm lucky and I'll also have to deal with a real germy situation. Instantly, he grabs a coffee stirrer and maneuvers it up his nose. Once it reaches his brain and he flinches to take it out, (eyes now watering and nose running), it goes directly into his mouth. I'm secretly cringing on the other side of the bar while he's sucking away at the snot covered stirrer.

Before leaving, he always finds the time to sneeze wildly into his hands and then wipe them on the bar as if it were made of Kleenex material. To give a proper goodbye, The Booger makes sure to shake hands with whoever is surrounding him which I avoid at all costs. Yuck!

Every time, without fail, I want to pick The Booger and flick him as far as I can away from the bar.

DJ O'Douls

Medusa Punch recipe
24 oz Zinfandel® white wine
8 oz peach schnapps
8 oz cranberry juice
1 splash sweet and sour mix

Fill a container (size of an iced-tea pitcher) almost halfway with ice. Fill to slightly above ice with a decent California White Zinfandel. Add one part peach schnapps, and a splash of sour mix. Fill the remaining space (should be a little less than a quarter of the pitcher) with cranberry juice. Seal and shake vigourously. Serve in glasses.

On Friday nights, we have a DJ to entertain the obnoxious people that feel the need to dance like they're in a club at a dive bar. So anyway, he comes in and sets up his shit (a laptop) right in the way of the store register blocking all of the liquor on the shelf. Constantly throughout the night, I am shoving him and every girl that goes up to him to request 90's dance music out of my way to grab a bottle of hennessy or to help the poor old man waiting to get his mega millions ticket.

On top of the not so great music stored on his playlist, he insists on blasting it at the highest volume known to man. Come on dude the last thing I want to do is have to scream to customers to figure out what they want to drink. I can probably name you in order the songs he's going to play too starting with a montage of 80's rock, then some Lil Jon, followed by a reggae block, and finally closing with a Guns n' Roses song which somewhat lifts my spirits. After all that he doesn't even bother to get on his little microphone to shout out the bartenders and to remind everyone to tip us like normal DJ's do. Isn't that part of their job?

Worst of all is that by the end of the night, he packs up at the speed of lightning while I am left to deal with the people who think that there is still music playing and refuse to leave the bar. Oh yea and before he leaves, he gets paid more than what I make in tips all night.

I'd like to serve him up some Medusa Punch, watch him turn to stone, then smash him to pieces along with his equipment.

Dirty Sink Water

Dirty Diaper recipe
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz amaretto almond liqueur
1/2 oz Southern Comfort® peach liqueur
1/2 oz Midori® melon liqueur
1/2 oz Chambord® raspberry liqueur
1/2 oz orange juice

Pour equal parts of all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice, and chill, shake, and strain.

Would you like bottle or draft? Psshht here's a hint, I would order a bottle if I were you. When faced with what you think is an innocent question of bottle or draft, it's always safe to go with the bottle in any bar and especially in mine.

Let me break the cleaning process down to you. There are 3 sinks behind the bar. One is filled with warm soapy water, the other with just warm water to rinse the soap off, and the last one (which should never be skipped in the process) is filled with a sanitizer. Normally, this 3 sink routine cleaning is effective in ridding a glass of its contents and germs but, on a late Friday night bartenders tend to get quite lazy. To begin, we leave the third and most important sink, might I add, empty for dumping purposes only. The first and second sink get filled up properly, however, during the 6 hour span of a busy night that water can soon turn from clear to yellow very fast. The soap suds eventually fizzle away and all types of ingredients may accidentally spill into the sink from beer to Cafe Patron to Bailey's giving the water a sort of milky texture. And let me tell you, if we are not in the mood for whatever reason to change that water, your glass is getting washed in it and put back in the freezer for the next time you come in. So for all of you 3am stragglers, I suggest you order up a bottle because you'll be the first to get a taste of the dirty sink water.

And for all those glass drinkers out there, well I pray for you. Us bartenders might as well stir your cocktail with a dirty diaper. It's all the same shit.

Lottery Jam

Liquid Gold recipe
1 oz vodka
1 oz cream
1/2 oz Galliano® herbal liqueur
1/2 oz white creme de cacao

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass.

On top of bartender and liquor store cashier, I also take on the responsibility of the ever so patient lottery machine operator. For anyone who doesn't play the NJ lottery or who is unfamiliar with it...STAY THAT WAY! The only people who actually play it are senior citizens. So, if you're feeling lucky one day and decide to stop in and buy some tickets, chances are you'll be stuck behind some 70 year old man who has nothing better to do with his money than spend it on $50 worth of Pick 3's and Pick 4's. There's no doubt that you'll be waiting in line for a while.

ATTENTION ALL LOTTERY VIRGINS: PLEASE REMAIN ABSTINENT!

To help those understand the utter aggravation of checking a stack of tickets for winners or punching in every variation of the number 6487; I am about to engage you in a little story. An old nagging woman comes in one day (the type that if you accidentally screw up one of her requests will condemn you to hell to spend an eternity in front of the lottery machine printing out her endless list of numbers)and hands me about five tickets to reprint the same numbers for that night. I obediently fulfill my duty as lottery machine operator and reprint her numbers. When I am done I ask if she needs the old tickets back and as she shakes her head NO, I throw them in the garbage. Just as I think my interaction with this woman is over, she discovers the winning Pick 3 number from the previous night and says that her old ticket was a winner. Annoyed that she didn't point this out before I had disposed of the tickets, I now find my pathetic self rummaging through a garbage full of losing lottery tickets which all look exactly the same.

After about what seemed like a lifetime of garbage picking, I finally find her ticket and scan it through the machine only to find out that it was NOT a winner at all. The old woman (whom I now want to jump over the counter and strangle with my bare hands) looks at me and says, "Oh really? I thought I had the winning number."

Do me a favor. When you're done wasting my time, I suggest you walk over to the bar and order up a pint of liquid gold because that's the closest you're ever going to get to hitting it big and I will personally make sure of that.

The Boss's Father

Ball Sweat recipe
3/4 oz 1800® Tequila
1/4 oz Irish cream
1/2 tsp salt

Put 1 or 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a shot glass. Pour the tequila in. Then if you have the skills, layer the irish cream on top (or mix). Shoot.

At work many people have issues with their boss. Me, on the other hand, I have issues with my boss's father. You see my boss is fairly young and he has his father work the morning to mid-afternoon shift. When I arrive at the bar, Chad's father (we will call him Larry) is there waiting for me to take over. I take off my coat and place my personal belongings on the shelf and not a minute later I am already pouring beers. It is at this point that you would think that Larry would go home, but no he doesn't. He gets himself a drink and plops his enormous pregnant belly on a bar stool and watches my every move as if I were a child using scissors for the first time.

I try my best to not let him irritate me but all attempts fail when I see the sink filled with dirty dishes that he didn't bother to do the entire day. As if his neglected chores weren't enough to aggravate me, Larry constantly makes remarks and asks the most retarded questions I've ever heard. Like when I turned 21 he goes, "So what can you do now that you're 21?" Ummm....let me see DRINK?! Isn't that what turning 21 is all about? You stupid fucking retard. He then proceeds to tell me all the things I can't do like rent a car for instance. Like I was really looking forward to that or something. On top of his mentally draining conversations where I feel myself getting dumber by the minute, he almost always has to come behind the bar. Let me remind you that the space behind the bar is very cramped leaving not much room for two people. But of course, him and his gut are always shuffling past me bumping into things while I say to myself, When are you going to drop that baby already?

Trying to be slick about it but with no success, I catch Larry sneaking peaks into my tip cup to see how much money I've made. One time, he even had the balls to comment on it saying, "Wow, you already got a ten dollar tip." I can tell he's trying to make me feel uncomfortable. I make more money in a half hour's time than he does all day and that's because I have a set of tits and a pretty face. Duh! You don't have to be a genius to figure that one out. He even watches me when I make a drink. He's making sure I don't put too much Jack in the coke so that it doesn't come out too strong. It's like he trying to catch me doing something wrong. Umm heeelllooo I have been working here for almost two years now. I think I got the gist of my job. Fuck you very much.

I wish I could take a collection of every man's ball sweat and serve it to him on the rocks. Now how's that for too strong?

I'm a Bartender NOT a Therapist

Pitbull On Crack recipe
1 1/2 oz vodka
1 1/2 oz rum
1 1/2 oz Jagermeister® herbal liqueur
1 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
1 oz Bailey's® Irish cream
1 1/2 oz half-and-half

Fill a 16 oz. glass with ice and add the alcohol. Stir and top off with cream, and serve.

WARNING! BEFORE ENTERING THE BAR, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR PROBLEMS AT HOME!

Unfortunately, this is never the case. Just about everyone who comes in to the bar is carrying a 20 pound sack of issues on their back and I'm the one who gets to hear it all. The last thing I want to do is have to come to work, serve drinks, and assess any issue you have with your wife, girlfriend, mistress, etc. Save it for the therapist couch not the bar stool.

One time I was alone in the bar with this "wacko" lady that comes in every once in a while. Being that there's no one else to run her mouth off to, she turns to me and proceeds to tell me her whole life story. "Oh yea all the cops around here know me. They are always coming to my apartment. My boyfriend gets drunk and yells at me. Well, he's not my boyfriend but, I live with him." Oh boy, the rambling has begun, I'm thinking in my head. She then goes on to tell me how he beats her and how she kicks him out but, then goes back to him. And the crazy thing about all this is, I don't even know if she's telling me the truth! Holy Crap this is not what I signed up for.

Then there's this man who comes in a few times a month and wants to talk to anyone who will listen. I always happen to end up alone with these people, why God why? One night, I was on my laptop because it was slow and he is right there next to me yapping away. He starts to tell me about his daughter who is around my age. I'm giving him the short, brief responses like oh yea? or uh huh, so that maybe he will get the point that I don't want to be bothered. But no, he continues on as if I am incredibly interested. Listen dude, I don't give a shit about your daughter. I don't know her nor do I want to. I could care less about where she went to school and what she is doing now. So please shut up and drink your beer and leave me the fuck alone!

Look people just in case in you're interested in how I feel I'd rather listen to a pitbull on crack than listen to what you have to say.

The Many Places to Find Vomit in a Bar Other Than the Bathroom

The Usual recipe
1 part Ketel One® vodka
1 part Quady Vya® sweet vermouth
2 ice cubes
1 slice lemon

Stir.

What's the difference between a toilet seat and a bartender?
Answer: A toilet seat can only deal with one asshole at a time.

A major part of being a bartender is dealing with drunk assholes. And sometimes these assholes get so drunk that they decide to puke wherever they feel it necessary. Rather than try to make it to the actual bathroom, they vomit on whatever surface or object is in the way giving it a decorative new paint job. And guess who gets to clean it all up? Well, it must be none other than...ME!

Let's see, one time I found an entire crave case from White Castle in chunky liquid form floating in the mop bucket! I mean I have no problem coating the floor with last night's dinner but, I'm not so sure Chad would like the smell of that. Who knows maybe the mysterious vomit came from Chad himself? Another time, upon closing up, Dick and I walked outside the front door only to miss stepping into a giant orange puddle by a quarter of an inch. What a spot! When I am walking to my car I would love nothing more than to create a footprint path of what looks like a screwdriver, potato chips, and a slim jim all blended together to a nauseating perfection.

Are you ready for the worst vomit story ever? I tried my best to prep you with the previous ones so that maybe you can stomach this one. One night when I was working with Betty, her lovely friends decided to come in and get really wasted. The perpetrator (aka the ultimate jerk-off) is sitting at the bar looking disturbingly queasy. Without even flinching to get up and go to the bathroom, this fool throws up ON THE BAR! And if you think this can't get any worse, well it does. Not only did he throw up on the bar but ON MY TIP MONEY too! If you're wondering whether I was desperate enough to take the tip, I will leave that up to your imagination. No questions please.

Next time you decide to order the usual try puking it up on your pillow instead of in my bar! Thanks!

3 A.M. Stragglers

Balls of Fire recipe
1 1/2 oz Midori® melon liqueur
1 1/2 oz Stone's® ginger wine
6 soda or sparkling mineral water

Add 2 main ingredients and 2/3 ice chunks - stir (or shake in a flask) - fill highball to top with fizzy waters and then gradually pour it down the inside of your neck.

On Friday nights the bar closes at 3am. Dick and I do last call at 2:30am in order to get everyone out by 3am, however, there are always those stragglers who take their sweet time to finish their damn beers and chit chat away as if I didn't want to go home! Recently we opened up the backroom in the bar which has a pool table, video games, and a few couches to relax on. Although this adds an element of fun to the 100 year old bar atmosphere it does not mean that you are welcomed to hang out after closing time!

It's 2:30am, SHOTS ONLY PEOPLE! SHOTS ONLY! "But can I please just get one more drink please?" Who the fuck are you and are you deaf? I just said shots only. Boy do I hate those people who beg for another drink. Does it look like I want to watch you babysit another Jack and Coke for the next 20 minutes until I kick you out whether you're finished with it or not? I don't think so. Now chug or get out. But just as I turn down my customers' requests, Mr. Authoritative Chad (the owner) comes along and gives me the "ok" to let them continue drinking. Whatever happened to the rules? When Chad decides to stick around for closing time, the rules get tossed down the drain right along with all the leftover drinks sitting on the bar. Normally, Dick and I kick everyone out and then start cleaning the empty bar but, when stragglers are permitted to stay, cleaning becomes quite an obstacle.

In my head I'm thinking, No No don't stop your conversation and move for me. Just keep talking and drinking while I maneuver heavy bar chairs and sweep around your feet. And that is exactly what they do. Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me, excuse me! After about 4 of those they finally notice my attempt to clean and move an entire foot out of my way. Again in my head I scream, Stupid Assholes! The worst part is that Chad is amongst them talking up a storm and doesn't even acknowledge that his tired bartenders might want to hurry up and clean and get to bed.

If only I could spit balls of fire directly at the stragglers causing them to burn up and turn into dust, so that I could sweep them right into my dustpan. Only then might I get home at a decent hour.

$10 Credit Card Minimum

Camel Piss recipe
3 oz Canadian beer
2 oz 1800® Tequila
1 oz Bacardi® dark rum
1 oz ouzo anise liqueur
Mountain Dew® citrus soda

Pour the beer, tequila, dark rum and ouzo into a highball glass. Top with mountain dew, to taste, and serve.

As I may have failed to mention, the bar I work at is in the middle of a liquor store. So, not only do I bartend but I also work the register up front for the liquor store as well. You can guess that this creates more work and aggravation than necessary and your guess is 100% correct.

When someone opens up a tab, majority of the time this means that they are paying with their credit card. At any normal bar, the credit card is swiped through the machine and there is a spot for the customer to leave a tip and to write down the total, but not at my bar. NO, I have to muster up the courage to ask if the customer is planning on leaving a tip on their credit card because what do ya know, there is no spot for a tip on the receipt! So rather than this being a confidential transaction it becomes an awkward conversation in which I assume they are leaving me a tip in hopes that my service was satisfactory. As if this isn't uncomfortable enough, once and if the person agrees, I then have to tell them that they must tell me how much of a tip they are adding to their tab so that I can ring it up altogether. Can I please excuse myself now before my face gets any more red from total embarrassment?

When it comes to buying packaged goods, you must spend at least $10 in order to use your credit card. Personally, I disagree with policies like this but hey I just work here. I don't make the rules nor do I bend them. One day this lady comes in (whom I have rung up several times before) trying to buy two 24oz. cans of beer which comes to a grand total of $4 with her credit card. I told her that we have a $10 minimum and of course her response is, "Since when?". Well, hmm let's see.......SINCE FOREVER! I sensed an argument coming and my blood began to boil. She proceeded to tell me that she always pays with her credit card and that she did so the day before. Annoyed and tired of being nice, I told her that I wasn't going to do it for her. To shut her up I called my boss to confirm the policy. While it was ringing, she had that "I'll prove you wrong" smirk across her face that I wanted to smack right off, but I calmly looked back at her knowing that my boss would side with me and make her feel like a complete douche bag. So Chad do we or do we not have a $10 minimum? "Yes we do," he said. And how long have we had that? "SINCE FOREVER!" he adds. Thank You! Now buy something else or give me cash and get the hell out of here you bitch of a customer you.

Oh and by the way I hope that your 4 dollars worth of beer tastes like camel piss. Have a great night now!

The Bar With Only One Martini Glass

Ka-boom recipe
1 1/2 oz coconut rum
1 oz banana liqueur
1 oz grenadine syrup
4 oz pineapple juice
1/2 oz limes

Mix lime, banana liqueur, and rum in glass. Add pineapple juice and stir. Add ice to fill glass. Add grenadine last and do not stir. Garnish with slice of lime and a cherry.

"Can I get a frozen margarita with salt?" a customer asks me as I look at her in disbelief. Have you looked around lady? This bar has been here since the beginning of time and so has all of its equipment. We don't even have a blender to make those fancy shmancy tropical island drinks that your mouth waters for. It's either beer or a mixed drink that calls for no more than three ingredients otherwise your ass is going somewhere else to drink.

Oh and did I mention that we only have one martini glass? That's right so if you and your girlfriend want to order two sour apple martini's then one of you is getting it in a frosted mug. So it's up to you to decide who is going to stoop down and drink a sophisticated lady's drink in a dirty man's beer mug. And one more thing, if you want it cold you have about a 50/50 chance that the ice machine is actually working and that there are a few refreshing cubes left to spare. When the ice machine is doing its job however, there is a small bucket similar to one that a five year old child would bring to the beach to fill up. It holds approximately 50 ice cubes and with each mixed drink using about 12 of those cubes...well you do the math. On Friday nights, the baby bucket gets filled more than I can count.

"May I have a glass of wine please?". Sure you have a choice between White Zinfandel, White Zinfandel, or White Zinfandel. Yes, you read correctly we only keep one kind of wine behind the bar so I hope you are in the mood for White Zinfandel. And if you want one of those sweet citrusy lemon drop shots that require a sprinkle of sugar to finish it off, well we don't have that either. Sorry to disappoint. I suggest you stick to the traditional pint of Budweiser here and steer away from anything too crazy because the chances are we probably don't have it and we probably never will.

When I am closing up at night, I'll slide that single martini glass across the bar pretending that it's really a grenade and...Ka-boom the entire eight seat bar gets blown to smithereens!

Buy Backs and the Ignorant People Who Expect Them

Raging Bull recipe
2 1/2 cl Kahlua® coffee liqueur
2 1/2 cl sambuca
1 cl 1800® Tequila

Layer in a shot glass; in order.

For all of you who don't know what a buy back is; a buy back is when the bar buys a customer back a drink after their fourth or fifth drink. This usually occurs only if the person is a regular at the bar (as in they come to the bar at least 6 days a week) or if the person is friend's with the owner of the bar which in my case, includes just about EVERYONE!

This normally becomes a problem on Friday nights when my coworker "Dick" and I are serving a decent size crowd of hooligans all of which have some sort of tie with the owner,"Chad". Whether they grew up with Chad or just happened to fix his toilet one day, they think that they deserve free drinks. Dick and I often hook people up (bartender slang for taking drinks off of tabs) with the expectation that they will leave a generous tip, however, this doesn't always work out the way we want it to. Unfortunately, there are quite a few ignorant regulars that think they are privileged and deserving of having their tab cut down to no more than $20 when they've had at least 8 drinks. Now that is just flat out ridiculous!

At 2:30am when it's time to do "last call" on all drinks, we start to hand out the dreadful tabs in hopes that the hooligans don't start to riot about owing $25 instead of $35. The appreciative ones hand us the money along with a tip appropriate to the original price and sometimes even more. The others are the ones that we need to worry about. They get so intoxicated that they start to argue about how many drinks they ordered or that we didn't hook them up enough. At this point, I start to curse them out in my head,"Well maybe if you didn't have so much to drink your tab wouldn't be so much you stupid asshole!". The funny thing is that Dick will actually say these things to their face. Yes! Go Team Bartender! Eventually, the inebriated fools will pay their $30 tabs and leave us a lousy $4 tip.

It is right then and there that I wish I could transform myself into a raging bull and charge the ignorant customers right out of the bar.

Splitting tips with a ditzy coworker

Circus Peanut recipe
2 oz brandy
2 oz advocaat liqueur
1 tsp arak
1 splash grenadine syrup

Have you ever had to split your tips with a coworker who just doesn't know how to do their job? Not only that but you end up carrying 95% of the weight all night! It's just not fair and I've begun to think that bartender's should have their own tip bucket rather than go 50/50. My thursday night coworker, we will call her Betty, is clueless when it comes to the art of bartending despite the fact she has been working with me since March of 2009.

Every f'n 20 minutes Betty goes outside to smoke a damn cigarette and she stays out there for a good 15 minutes while I'm inside busting my ass to make sure that everyone has a drink. So because I don't smoke that means I don't get a break? Another reason why I deserve my own tip bucket. I'm starting to believe if we were in competition with each other then maybe just maybe, Betty might start to do a little more work around the bar. It gets very frustrating when I see her having an intense conversation with a customer and she neglects the poor man just a few inches away waiting patiently for a beer. BE PATIENT EVERYONE, Betty has her blinders up and no one is getting another drink until she is done having her 10 minute conversation about what color to dye her hair next.

Then comes the dancing! "Let's wear matching school girl outfits and dance on the bar next week!" she says to me while I give her the HELL NO look. I'm sorry but I refuse to dress sexy for the 60 year old perverted men that come into my bar and get annihilated to the point that they can't even walk to the bathroom. No Thanks! At the end of the night I make sure to count the tips so that Little Miss Ditz doesn't make a major miscalculation and end up screwing me out of 20 bucks.

I sometimes imagine that she is that circus peanut that gets crushed and stuck beneath my shoe so that I can sneak away with 100% of the tips.
